However, there was a high popular acceptance of the use of bicycles, so there could be no going back. This support had to be matched by a change in the culture of transport around the city. It was necessary to demonstrate greater tolerance (among cyclists, pedestrians and drivers) and value certain traffic rules. In this regard, the activism work of the cycling groups was going to be key, especially during the first stages of the experience.
The first days of using the bike share system were difficult, as there were computer problems. However, in September the first efficient results could begin to be tested. At the end of 2014, there were 26,000 subscribers and each bike moible number data was used about four times a day. In Barcelona, there were 96,000 subscribers to the public service and each bicycle was used six times a day. Regarding daily uses, 6,000 were produced in Madrid.
These are figures that allow us to see the future with optimism. The fact of having to pay to access the service has not discouraged users, due to its low cost. Besides, the users of the main roads have become accustomed to the massive circulation of bicycles, so coexistence is developing in tune. In short, the success of BiciMAD will have positive consequences for the citizens of Madrid: reduction of pollution and traffic jams.
